Biography
Fabian Cancellara started cycle racing at the age of 12 – and won nearly every race he entered. The talented youngster became one of the world’s top racing cyclists. Season after season he has chalked up successes, including 2010: within one week this native of Berne won the Tour of Flanders and, for the second time, the one-day Paris-Roubaix race in the “Hell of the North”. At the world championships he carried off the gold medal in the individual times trials for the fourth time, an unprecedented achievement. And for almost a week he sported the leader’s jersey in the Tour de France, an item of clothing he had already worn 28 times since 2004 – more than any other Swiss.
He has also fulfilled the dream of an Olympic gold medal as well: in 2008 he triumphed in the time trials, his speciality discipline, and also won silver in the road race. In the same year he was awarded the title of “Swiss Sportsman of the Year”. Often the strongest in sport, in life he champions the weakest: Fabian Cancellara is an ambassador for the Laureus Foundation of Switzerland, which seeks to improve the life chances of disadvantaged children through sport.
