I want to defend the jersey
13.06.2009
A fitting start to the Tour de Suisse. I've already said that I would give it my all today in the Tour de Suisse prologue from Mauren to Ruggell. I've always kept my focus on the thing that will get me back to the top of the world: serious training The motivation to get back to the top has served me well every time. Finishing today with such a big lead shows that I'm in very good shape.
It's been a long time since I could say that. At my last win in the Tour of California in mid-February, I was in a bit of a daze and couldn't enjoy the victory as much as I can here in Ruggell. Of course, today's win can't compare with taking the Olympic gold medal in Beijing.
There are still quite a few kilometers separating it from Olympic status. It's great to be able to wear the leader's jersey right at the start of the Tour de Suisse. Tomorrow in the second stage from Davos to Davos, I'll give everything I've got to defend the jersey.
It's a matter of honour. With this win, the yellow jersey, and a strong team behind me, anything is possible. The way I performed today gives me even more confidence.
Even if mountains aren't my specialty, the leader's jersey gives you wings. I'm ready to ride hard and long, to take it to the absolute limit. I'm really looking forward to the next several days.
Yours, Fabian.
