I said from the beginning that I was going to take the Giro d'Italia day by day. I am very pleased with the race and consider myself lucky to have been a part of the special atmosphere of the Giro's 100th anniversary.

But now I'm dropping out. I will definitely compete in the Giro again in the future.

I really want to deliver a good result here just once.

I wish my team the best of the luck with the rest of the race. The season didn't really work out for me as I would have liked it to.

But I think I'm on the right track.

I'm going to take the next few days off before heading off with the other cyclists to a training centre in the Alps.
